Everything you need to know about the 2025 Tesla Model Y (Juniper)

The Tesla Model Y may be the world's best-selling car, but the company is working on releasing an upgraded version. While many people will be disappointed that the new Mode Y (codenamed Project Juniper) will not be released in 2024, we have rounded up everything worth knowing about the update, including all the new features.

Tesla launched the Model Y in 2020 and has not updated it since then. This means the upcoming upgrade is an exciting one for many fans of the electric SUV. One of the most visible changes is the external appearance, which, going changes made to the Tesla Model 3, will increase the driving range.

In the Highland update, Tesla extended the Model 3's driving range by 8 percent by updating its aerodynamics and electronics, reducing its drag coefficient from 0.23 to 0.219.

If Tesla makes similar changes to the Model Y and achieves a comparable driving range extension, the SUV could now boast more than 350 miles, up from around 330 miles.

In addition, Tesla appears to have updated the rear, based on images of the new Model Y that have appeared on the internet. It seems a light bar has been slapped on the back, a departure from the C-shaped clusters on the Model 3.

Tesla also updated the interior of the Model 3, significantly improving the user experience. If the Model Y gets the same treatment, buyers can expect a redesigned center console, new seat materials, and a new rear touchscreen.

However, they may also see the indicator controls moving from a stalk to the steering wheel. This has generated criticism for the EV maker, but it is yet to be seen if the backlash will force it to retain the current setup in the Model Y.

Meanwhile, it appears Tesla will keep the Model Y's powertrain and charging systems the same. The car already has a high maximum charging speed (250 kW), but Tesla might increase it to fireproof it against future competition.

The Model 3 Performance can now clock 62 mph in 3.1 seconds from zero and boasts a maximum speed of 163 mph. If the Model Y Juniper can pull this off or come close, it will be among the fastest crossovers.

However, if you can't wait for the new Model Y, you might be excited about the latest prices of used Tesla cars. In what is a win for used-car buyers, the prices of second-hand Model 3s and Model Ys are coming down as the brand dominates the used EV trade, according to data from Cars.com.

The online car marketplace reports that 42 percent of its stock of used EVs were Teslas, naturally lowering their prices. Cars.com's data shows that the used Tesla Model 3's price has declined by 29 percent since last year, while the Model Y's has dropped by 27 percent.

Listings of the Model 3 can be found on the website for less than $14,000, making now one of the best times to go for a used Tesla.
