Even though the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling vehicle globally in 2023, it could not conquer its home territory. However, 2024 might be the first time the electric SUV occupies the top spot, according to data obtained by WolfStreet.
Tesla ended 2023 as the manufacturer of the highest-selling model globally. However, in the US, the Tesla Model Y could not overtake the Ford F-150 in popularity. According to a WolfStreet report derived from new vehicle registration data from Experian, however, this year might finally be the year of the Model Y in the US.
The Tesla Model Y is close to overtaking even the best-selling ICEs. It came a very close second to the Toyota RAV4 in market share in the first half of 2024 at 2.8% each. It has already overtaken the F-150 pickup truck with just 2.7%, even when the fully electric version is counted.
Next was the Honda CR-V, which accounted for 2.5% of new vehicle sales. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was in 5th place, with 2.5%.
This is a massive change from last year's standings when the Tesla Model Y came fifth. It would be even more shocking if it manages to dislodge the F-150 from the top spot by the end of the year, which the Ford pickup has occupied for more than four decades.
It is also significant that the Model Y is about to outclass a pickup in the US, known for its love of oversized pickup trucks.
Rumors have been circulating that Tesla is working on a refreshed Model Y, similar to its update to the Model 3 in the US this year. Eagle-eyed internet users have posted photos of what looks like an updated Model Y being tested in public. However, CEO Elon Musk has clarified that the improved Model Y will not be coming this year.
Tesla has stated that new cars are coming early next year as the EV maker looks to boost sales by expanding its lineup to include less expensive models. Musk has warned about the sales of Model Y tanking as buyers tarry for the updated SUV.
If the coming updates to the Model Y are similar to those to the Model 3 Highland, the SUV could get an even more aerodynamic body, a boost in driving range, and a rear redesign. Inside, the center console could also see a redesign, new seat materials, and a new rear touchscreen.
Tesla might also move the indicator controls from a stalk to the steering wheel, although this could polarize its fanbase.
