Online used car market Carvana has revealed the top five EVs their customers do a trade-in for, and the top three spots are occupied by Tesla. The most traded-in for EV for Q2 2024 was the Model 3, followed by the Model Y. The Tesla Model S came fourth, behind the Chevrolet Bolt EUV.
Tesla continues to convert ICE owners to EV lovers, and data from used car giant Carvana shows just how well the conversion is going. When the company released its list of the EVs that buyers trade in their old models for, three of Tesla’s EVs appeared in the top five spots. The insight was released as part of Carvana’s Q2 2024 financial report.
The Tesla Model 3 sedan was the most sought-after in the second quarter of 2024. It attracted most buyers from drivers ditching their Honda Civic and Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and BMW 3 series.
The Tesla Model Y SUV came second, with its buyers coming from the Honda Accord, Toyota Corolla, BMW 3 Series, and Lexus IS. The Model Y is a very popular car, ending 2023 as the best-selling car worldwide.
The next Tesla car was the Model S, coming in at fourth. However, most of its buyers were already Tesla customers, as they mainly upgraded from the Model 3 or an older Model 3. This shows the American company can convince its customers to try its premium product. Other cars that were traded in for the Model S were the Honda Accord, Mercedes-Benz C Class, and GLC.
Meanwhile, pictures of what could be the updated Model Y have surfaced online. The refreshed version, codenamed Juniper, has been in the news since last year after Tesla officially released and started selling the Model 3 Highland.
However, there have been speculations that the refreshed Juniper update might be Tesla transposing the updates from the Highland. This is not impossible, given the similarities in appearance between the original Model 3 and Model Y.
The purported leaked pictures of the Model Y Juniper were first uploaded to Reddit by the TeslaMotors subreddit. One of them shows a feature that could distinguish the Model Y from the less expensive Model 3: a bar of red light on the rear with a “Tesla” lettering. The new Model 3 does not have this feature.
The second photo shows the interior of the Model Y Juniper, hinting that the cabin will be similar to the Model 3 Highland.
However, fans eagerly awaiting the refreshed Model Y will be disappointed that CEO Elon Musk has said it is not coming this year. The company boss emphasized that the expectation could tank Tesla sales for the rest of the year as customers wait for the updated version.
What is clear, though, is that Tesla is releasing new models early next year. While it has not commented on a possible 2025 availability of the Model Y Juniper, Tesla has committed to bringing at least a cheaper model to the market to stimulate sales.
